I've removed the link to the Most Popular page. Most Popular was really contributing nothing to dating and was a performance hindrance on my site. I encourage members to continue to rate one another. A members total ranking will determine where they appear in the sort order on the pages. I look at several factors, besides just someone's rating, but the more liked a member is, the higher they will appear in the sort order. I'll expound on this further in a future posting.

new ads showing in profiles

I've added a new spot for advertisements in member's profiles. Look here you'll see them immediatly to the right of the photos. I've tried to keep the advertisements as unobtrusive as possible. There are now video advertisements displaying on some of the pages. They are a nice change to the routine banner and text ads.

server maintenance

Performed maintenance on my web and SQL Server today. As a result the servers were slower and the site was prone to timeout errors. I've finished 95% of the maintenance, the rest will be completed by 11 pm pacific time.

Faster Profiles

I've completed upgrading all the profiles so they will display faster. Previously they were averaging 2.5 seconds each to display. They now display average 0.025 seconds. A few problems may creep up, please let me know. The load on the server has dramatically decreased, as a consequence all the pages are displaying faster. I also gzipped the web server, something I should have done long ago. This has dramatically helped speed up load times and decrease bandwidth.

I am still able to run the site on two servers; one database and one web. Previously I was running the site on two co-located dual xeon servers, but I was getting creamed on bandwidth costs. I moved to two dedicated servers at 1 & 1 and dropped my expenses by an order of magnatude without a loss in performance. I look back at my expenses in those days and I am surprised I didn't go broke. That business model was not sustainable. I was also paying over $500/day in Google AdWords. I've cut back on the advertising and I am maximizing my organic traffic before going back to advertising again. In my opinion, top tier sites spend cash on advertising like it's growing on trees. If the suits in the corner office let their programmers and web deveopers concentrate on SEO they'd get more traffic cheaper, and at a rate that is sutainable. I am one guy and I have the 33rd most popular dating site in the world according to Alexa. As far as I know, I am the largest dating site run by one person based in the United States.

Right now I am holding steady at 450,000 page views per month. I expect that to increase with the performance boost, and the new year.

Changes to member profile page

I am making changes to the member profile page over the coming weeks. My objective is to make the pages load faster. To the end I need to tighten up the code and remove or move some of the functionality.

Today I removed the "personal contact" section at the bottom of the profile page. This section allowed members to voluntarily post their IM, e-mail and web page information. I did this not for optimization, but to keep scammers and spammers from harvesting this information. I have 120,000 members, about 75% had posted their e-mail address in this section. That is a gold mine for any spammers and scammers. Members are welcome to post this information in their essay answers if they choose, but I highly discourage it.

I will be moving the rating system to a separate page soon.

Rental scams

We recently posted a room for rent on several roommate and rental websites. I haven't figured out what exactly the scam is but I get about 40 e-mails a day from people claiming to be from the UK or Australia expressing an interest in our rental. I became suspicious when the e-mailers claimed to be models and many of the e-mails were similar in content. I've posted a few of the e-mails below. If you are renting a room or property, do yourself a favor and do not post your e-mail address. Post your telephone number, and make them call you. Our legit renters where the ones that called.

In the year 2000 I got transferred to the United Kingdom, which obviously I did not find it easy at all initially but had to cope because of my sustenance. Some weeks ago, a memo came from our head office notifying me of my transfer which I called "A RETURN BACK HOME".... lol.

I am writing just to confirm if you still have the room for rent..............If YES Please I will like to have answers to the following questions below:
1) I will like to have the description of the room, size, and the equipments in there.
2) I will like to have the rent fee per month plus the utilities.
3) I will also be coming with some of my furniture, that is if it is allowed, like bed, book shelf because I read alot, shoe rank etc

La Quinta Inn in San Diego

On our trip back to my hometown San Diego, we stayed at La Quinta Inn in Mission Valley. This property was formerly a Marriot/Fairfield Inn and we stayed here often. It is still a great place to stay. It is cheap ($75.00 with AAA discount on Thanksgiving) and the free WiFi is fast! The staff is friendly, the rooms are clean and their breakfast is free. Breakfast consists of waffles, pastry's, coffee and juice. The hotel (or is it motel?) is close to everything in central San Diego. The beaches, zoo, park, airport and all major freeways are just a few minutes away. Target is across the freeway if you forgot to pack any essentials. The only suggestion I have to the staff, is please use scent free bleach when washing the linens :)

Tip: Try to get a room on the top floor. You can hear any kids running around on the floor above you if you don't.

Previously dating scams were targeting men to women 90 to 10. Now it's 50 50. Women beware... Scammers will usually post a photo of a very attractive man, will address their emails to "my dear" or "my angel" and their English is very poor. It can take me up to 1 day to root out a scammer. I've decided to go back to posting scammers on this blog. I'll be posting the e-mail addresses in bunches; as I clear them out a coupl,e times a day. I'll noi longer post their photos since the photos are rarely (if ever) of the scammer, but stolen from other sites. I'll post the contents of the e-mails they send it they send any. This allows people to google on emails from scammers on other sites to see if they have been posted here.

This is my criteria for posting someone on my scammer list

1. They lie about their location, especially if they are posting from Nigeria, Russia, Ukraine, West Africa or UAE and say they are from another country.
2. Post a photo that is obviously a super model.
3. Sign in from mulitple countries in the same day.
4. They have confirmed that the e-mail address they are using is theirs or they have hacked someone's e-mail acct. I do not post an e-mail address unless they have gone through the confirmation process.

I know this list has become usefull and I appreciate everyone using the comments section to inform others of scams.

cnn news appearing in my ads

On OtherSingles I recently saw an Google AdSense advertisement titled "Jeffrey Epstein Arrested" with the subtext "Billionaire charged in prostitution ring" with a link to the page on CNN. I haven't noticed news items in Google AdSense before but maybe I missed it. Is CNN purchasing advertising on Google AdSense or did a third party purchase the advertisement and for what reason??

I'm diggin digg

I'm addicted to digg. I can't help but wonder the business model of making a digg for dating profiles. What are the privacy implications of posting a photo from a third party dating site? Even if the profile was pulled live from the dating site, and removed when they left I don't think people would appreciate having their photo propagated over the Internet without their permission.

The demise of my spammers blog

I haven't had any spammers to post for a while because OtherSingles hasn't had any in awhile. I've automated my site to detect spammers and delete them on the spot. Very few have made it through. Maybe I should patent and license the technology; it is very simple to implement but very few other dating sites do it. Online daters are getting more savy and are sick of scammers and spammers. Read through this blog and you will see customers from the pay sites that are sick of being scammed from fake profiles created by the dating sites to get their free members to upgrade. That's why I made this site free, and that's why it continues to grow.

What does this mean??

Blocking users from Russian, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Ukraine

I am now blocking users from the countries above due to the large volume of scammers attempting to scam money from my members. Most sites allow profiles to be created from these countries because they add to their membership base and they entice non-paying members to pay to contact them. These profiles always have pictures of beautiful models and near perfect women/men. Eventually they will ask you for money for a visa/air fare/transalation services. You and your money will soon be parted. These profiles are easily blocked, if your dating site isn't blocking them, you need a new dating site.

Mitchell Zuckoff writes in the New Yorker of John Worley, a Massachusetts psychotherapist, and how he fell for a Nigerian e-mail scam, lost $40,000, was sentenced to 2 years in Federal prison and ordered to pay $600,000 in restitution.

Late one afternoon in June, 2001, John W. Worley sat in a burgundy leather desk chair reading his e-mail. He was fifty-seven and burly, with glasses, a fringe of salt-and-pepper hair, and a bushy gray beard. A decorated Vietnam veteran and an ordained minister, he had a busy practice as a Christian psychotherapist, and, with his wife, Barbara, was the caretaker of a mansion on a historic estate in Groton, Massachusetts. He lived in a comfortable three-bedroom suite in the mansion, and saw patients in a ground-floor office with walls adorned with images of Jesus and framed military medals. Barbara had been his high-school sweetheart—he was the president of his class, and she was the homecoming queen—and they had four daughters and seven grandchildren, whose photos surrounded Worley at his desk.

Worley scrolled through his in-box and opened an e-mail, addressed to “CEO/Owner.” The writer said that his name was Captain Joshua Mbote, and he offered an awkwardly phrased proposition: “With regards to your trustworthiness and reliability, I decided to seek your assistance in transferring some money out of South Africa into your country, for onward dispatch and investment.” Mbote explained that he had been chief of security for the Congolese President Laurent Kabila, who had secretly sent him to South Africa to buy weapons for a force of élite bodyguards. But Kabila had been assassinated before Mbote could complete the mission. “I quickly decided to stop all negotiations and divert the funds to my personal use, as it was a golden opportunity, and I could not return to my country due to my loyalty to the government of Laurent Kabila,” Mbote wrote. Now Mbote had fifty-five million American dollars, in cash, and he needed a discreet partner with an overseas bank account. That partner, of course, would be richly rewarded.

In May, 2005, Worley went on trial in U.S. District Court in Boston on charges of bank fraud, money laundering, and possession of counterfeit checks. Worley’s overseas correspondents, whose real identities he never knew, disappeared, and were never located or charged. With them went more than forty thousand dollars of Worley’s money and nearly six hundred thousand dollars from the checks. Including credit-card interest, money-wiring fees, long-distance telephone charges, and the tax lawyer’s bills, Worley’s losses may have been closer to eighty thousand dollars.
